This is a color photo from the original b&w. My mother, Effie. is in the center. Her best friend, Ceil, is on the left, and her cousin, Rae, is on the right.
I was not sure of the date but 1940s in Bensonhurst is a good guess. So I prompted AI (Gemini) to discuss their fashion choices and you can see the answer in the first comment. Pretty cool. Still trying to pinpoint the location. Check the my comment below
But here's a sweet backstory.
Last December Elena and I went to to the Sephardic Community Center for a Hanukkah party and lunch. We sat down at one of the long tables to eat. I looked up and turned to Elena.
"i know that woman across the table" I said.
" Even her name!"
I suddenly made eye contact with this memory.
"I'm really sorry but is your name Moselle?"
She nodded with surprise.
"And your mother's name is Ceil.
She said yes, still trying to figure me out.
"Your mother and my mother Effie were best friends and you lived on East 5th st.
She warmed up and smiled.
"I used to hang out in front of your house with my friends"
She remembered and we spoke a bit about our mothers.
I told her I would send her this picture and others I have of them together.
How wonderful!
Enjoy the music!
